“In this demo, I’ll be going over the new templates feature in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central that was released in Wave 2 in 2021.
This is the Microsoft documentation for this update. This outlines how to use the template – you can see here that it’s used for the customer, vendor, item, and employee lists. This document goes through personalizing a Customer Template and adding the Credit Limit field here and then applying it to an existing customer or it can be applied to a new customer.
So to go over this, search for Customer Templates. Select CUST000001. We can Personalize the screen -add a field here and apply these to this template. In the example, they have used Credit Limit which I have already added here. Let’s add Tax Area Code as well. Hit Done and it’ll save.
Let’s specify the Credit Limit here as $20,000. If I apply this to a customer that has no credit limit set, it’ll apply this $20,000 to it.
If we go to our Customer List, we can apply this new template to the screen by highlighting the customer’s name and going to Actions > Apply Template. I can do that for multiple ones if I select multiple companies.
We can also go directly into the customer card. You can see the information here – we have a credit limit of zero. Our information is already filled in. If I go to Actions> Functions > Apply Template, I can select that template we just edited. Press OK. You’ll see that the $20,000 of credit limit I specified gets applied to the customer card. You’ll notice that nothing else changed under the address or anything else here. Any field that’s already filled in for an existing customer will be unchanged. When you apply the template anything that is not filled in will be applied with what is in the template.
This works for customer cards, vendor cards, items and employee records. This is a feature that functions very similar to Configuration Templates. So, if we search for Configuration Templates here, you can see that these are the templates that we saw previously but they are a little harder to work with. It’s not as easy to personalize, add and edit fields and then just apply them. So, this is the new Microsoft feature that makes that a little easier.”
